First Fitction Writing Tips

1.      “First, know how it ends.”
To finish the novel the first thing is not just go without a direction but to know where you will go. Most of the time, we start a novel without a plan and a destination because we don’t really know where we can get. We may want to surprise readers but it is like a travel. We should plan the destination and the point we desire to then we as the guiders can lead our readers to get to the same places. On the way to the destination, we can meet surprises but we cannot go without an aim that our readers may be lost as we lose our directions. In this sense, we should know where we will go. That means we won’t change our topics when we know what our point is. Then we can go to the next step.

2.      Write your ending, and then write to it.
There may be a lot of ideas coming up when you think about your ending. In that case, you can try to write the last scene or a couple of scenes, or maybe a huge climax scene, as back plans. Then you have many clues and hints for the ending but don’t make everything in the exactly places but allow yourself to have surprises at the same time. You can also think about how you can set these plots cleverly then you can go into the middle part. It is still the same as a journey that even though you know where is your final goal; you still can design how to get there, by boat, by bike or by train, or you may try all of the transportation ways to get there. But keep in mind, to get there is the goal, then let’s go.

3.      Create five or six "candy-bar" scenes, and use them to keep you moving forward.
As you have already know where will you lead us to go, you should plan some stop places that are “candy-bar” for you and also the readers to go with you. That is to say, you should have several your favorite scenes that you really want to write about and you are really like to write about that can keep your own interest to get to the end. If you are really enjoy writing those scenes, readers may be influenced by your passions too. Those “candy-bars” are like gas station that keeps you and us to continue. Remember to spread candy bars the entire novel not put them together.

4.      Write about people you enjoy spending time with
Going travelling absolutely should be with your favorite people or you cannot continue this journey or you may feel you are upset but in a novel, there may be some other small characters and scenes should involves in unhappy things. But keep in mind, whatever you write, you must be familiar with it then you won’t make your readers feel what your points are to introduce these people and these places. But be careful with the time you spend with your favorite and unhappy people. Don’t overwrite on the people you like or hate because you may lose your point. When I wrote about my novel, I overwrote about my favorite friend that distracted the reader’s attention from the main character. Don’t stays in the gas station too long or you may forget your destination.

5.      Use an outline
This is pretty obvious. As I mentioned before, we should know where we go. It means we should have a map and draw a route for our trip. It means we should know where we stop and we should go.

6.      Allow yourself to be surprised
Even though we know the routine, we still can let ourselves be

7.      Write because you want to, not because you should
8.      Write what you love, not ‘what sells.’”
